I have been asked a couple of times now about the company name and the logo, so here it is. Let me start with the name, TRI DET Solutions Group. The first part, “TRI” is for my three children, whom without their existence I would not be the person I am today. Becoming a parent is by far the most difficult and rewarding experience of my life. Kids do not come with an owner’s manual so no matter how much advice you get, these little humans are all unique and require your constant ability to change and adapt. Second, I am huge believer in the “Rule of 3”. Whether it is span of control with people, tasks you can successfully engage with, or just about anything in life, 3 seems to be the magic number for most people.
Now, for the “DET”. It stands for Decision Making, Equipment, and Tactics. Too often in my profession when something would go wrong you would hear someone say, “What were they thinking?” Yup, poor decisions were afoot. We train a lot in police work, but we do a poor job in educating our staff. And I do not mean by getting a bunch of fancy degrees or certificates. I am referring to that institutional knowledge of the job. Humans commit some of the greatest atrocities on the face of the planet. With that comes the opportunity to analyze those atrocities and learn from them, yet we typically do not. Shame on us. Many have said before that we must teach people how to make decisions, especially during times of crisis so we don’t make the problem exponentially worse. As far as Equipment and Tactics, let me give you my take on them. Equipment does make life easier, check that, the right equipment can make life easier. Too often I see people or organizations buying the latest and greatest whatever and they have no idea how to use it or if it in fact helps them. Equipment should complement you and your mission. As far as Tactics are concerned, yes they have a significant role in our problem solving. “Get ‘em on 3” is not a tactic. The application of specific tactics must be well thought out and strategic, they are an art.
Let’s talk the “Solutions Group” part of the name. I formed TRI DET on the trials, tribulations, and knowledge of a large group of great people. They have shaped me into the person I am now. Their humility and desire to share information is what drove me. I also have a group of people I can rely on when I need help. I have firearms instructors, decision makers, personal wellness people, and true thinkers that share the desire to help others. I can call on them for the “mission” at hand, aka the need and the client.
Finally, let’s look at the logo. As you can probably see the number 3 has been an ever-present factor in my life. My 3 children, the “Rule of 3”, and what I try to keep in perspective, in that success relies on the mind, the body, and the spirit. Yup, once again, 3. As far as the 3 triangles they are of equal length and angle, making every side equally important, equally strong. They each compliment each other nicely. When it comes to their positioning it’s simple. Regarding my career, I feel I reached the pinnacle of what I could do in law enforcement. I accomplished everything that was available to me at my agency. I reached the top of the mountain. I had a very robust career, but I worked my tail off to get to every assignment and I worked even harder while I was in them. I was ready to climb my next mountain, but you cannot do that until you descend the mountain you are on. There is an interesting thing about climbing a mountain, I have never seen the mountain quit and give up. The climber might, but the mountain never does. So, I took in the view from the mountain I just climbed, and it was spectacular. The view was absolutely worth the climb, but then again, I am one of those twisted people that likes the pain, I thrive on the hardship. I fell in love with the process, plain and simple. As I descend this mountain, I will meet you at the bottom. I do have one question for you, just one. Are you ready to climb the next mountain with me?
Cheers mates,
Jon
